We’re studying Brian Friel’s Translations with form V at the moment. The play’s action takes place over three days in 1833 at a hedge school in Baile Beag, a small town in Donegal. The British army have arrived to remap the land; the focus of the play is how they go about Anglicising the Gaelic place names. It’s easy to relate to the play if you’ve ever spent time in Ireland as almost all of our signage shows both the Gaelic and English names. The very useful site Log Ainm is a comprehensive store of these names and makes a good resource for students to investigate as homework or project work.
